New Combo on Going Green-Onspec Composites Recycling Plastic Using ICOR International Refrigerant
Eco-conscious consumers are contributing to the popularity of the plastic lumber manufactured in Cincinnati by Onspec Composites as well as the growing use of ICOR International's energy efficient R-22 refrigerant replacement, NU-22®.

Jay Mayer, owner of Onspec Composites, says that plastic decking has become big business for the manufacturer of 100% recovered plastic products. At Onspec, a variety of recycled plastics are molded into lumber forms that can be used for decks, truck beds, and other applications where moisture is a concern. Using plastics that otherwise would add to our landfills, enviro-friendly plastic lumber saves our scarce wood resources and also can theoretically be recycled at the end of its useful life.

So when a refrigerant replacement was needed on the water cooled chiller connected to its plastic processing machine, Onspec had a natural interest in "going green" in its choice. On the recommendation of its ACR service tech, Tom Thiemann of TS Repair Service, Inc., Onspec chose ICOR's NU-22® refrigerant, which is both energy efficient and zero ozone depleting.

"The chiller is keeping the machine cool," reports Onspec's Jay Mayer, "and everything is working okay with no problems. No additional service calls have been needed."

Madigan Refrigeration, Waunakee, Wisconsin

Walk-in Freezer Running Well Two Years after Conversion to NU-22

A walk-in freezer operating at -5 degrees was converted from R-22 to
NU-22 by Mark Madigan of Madigan Refrigeration. The system is lubricated with AB oil, uses a TXV metering device and has a remote condenser. After conversion to NU-22 the pressures as well as the amp draw were within system specifications. Madigan said the system has been running since the conversion, two years ago, with no problems, and he is very pleased with the overall conversion.

Mitchell Technical Institute, Mitchell, South Dakota

Less Gas Required with NU-22 in Conversion of A/C from R-22

Terry Thie, HVAC/R department head at Mitchell Tech, achieved lower discharge and suction pressures when he converted a 3 1/2 ton American Standard air conditioner from R-22 to NU-22. The unit had a remote condenser and fixed metering device and used mineral oil. Amp draw remained within system specifications after conversion. Thie reported a 19 degree split across the coil with NU-22, compared to 11 degrees with R-22 and said less gas was required with NU-22 than with R-22. He added that the conversion was fast and easy and NU-22 works great.

Heat Pump Ran All Winter with No Problems Thie also converted a 2 1/2 ton Carrier heat pump to NU-22. This unit had a remote condenser and fixed metering device and used mineral oil. He reported that the head and suction pressures were lower after conversion and that the amp draw remained within system specifications. Thie said the conversion was easy and that the heat pump was running all winter with no problems. He has 30 more units to convert and is looking forward to working with ICOR with One Shot.

Weigel MEPFP, Sunnyvale, California

Computer Cooling System Out Performs 134a
Maintains High Ambient Temp and Stays On Line

Wes Weigel converted a remote condenser computer cooling system with a TXV metering device from 134a to NU-22. The system uses MO oil. Weigel reported that the system ran with lower head pressure and about the same suction pressure after conversion and that Amp draw was within system specifications. Desired temperature was achieved within a reasonable time. Indicating that the system ran better on NU-22 than it did on 134a, Weigel commented, "The computer cooling system runs in high ambient, 120 degrees F. It stayed on line and maintained temperature."

Flagship Marine

Manufacturer of A/C Systems for Recreational, Commercial & Military Marine Industries

"Flagship Marine is committed to protecting the environment. NU-22 helps us do just that."

Soon after production and distribution of NU-22 began in September of 2001, Flagship Marine designated the zero ozone depletion refrigerant as the standard for its marine products. Tom Martland, president of Flagship Marine, said, "We have been patiently waiting for a right refrigerant to be made available, and are now ready to make a change that we are confident will benefit the environment without compromising our equipment in any way whatsoever! We believe NU-22 is a permanent and desirable 'fix' for this problem and are delighted to voluntarily make this change well before we are compelled to. Flagship Marine is committed to protecting the environment. NU-22 helps us do just that." Flagship Marine has a record of exceeding even the most stringent environmental standards years in advance and constantly monitored the many new refrigerants, being very cautious about making any radical changes while looking forward to using a zero ozone-depleting refrigerant. When NU-22 became available, Flagship Marine couldn't have been happier.

Swimming Pool Heat Pump Manufacturer finds NU-22 Increases Efficiency in Critical Low Air Temperature

United States ThermoAmp, Inc., manufacturer of Heat Siphon® swimming pool heat pumps, has shipped products charged with NU-22 (R-417a) refrigerant in the U.S. and Europe for over four years. Always an innovator, United States ThermoAmp has celebrated many "firsts" in the swimming pool heat pump industry: First with the titanium heat exchanger and the electrically isolated heat exchanger; first pool heater manufacturer to produce in-house vacuum formed plastic PVC cabinets; and the first to use non-ozone depleting NU-22 in swimming pool heat pumps.

According to William Bernardi, president of United States ThermoAmp, its first container load of Heat Siphons charged with NU-22 was shipped to Sweden in early 2000. Bernardi said, "There is no other refrigerant I know of that offers direct drop in replacement of R-22 with no oil changes, no special driers and no contamination or mixing concerns. In addition, NU-22 actually increases efficiency in the critical low air temperature operation of swimming pool heat pumps compared with R-22"

Virtis, an SP Industries Company

NU-22 Used as Refrigerant in Freeze Dryers in All Areas of the World.

Virtis, an SP Industries Company, a world leader in freeze drying technology, produces equipment using ICOR's NU-22 refrigerant. Virtis manufactures a variety of environmentally friendly systems for the biotechnology, biochemical, agricultural research, pharmaceutical and life science industries. "NU-22 provides us with a practical, environmentally safe solution to the replacement of R-22," said Ted Sutherland, vice president of Virtis. "The majority of freeze dryers sold call for cascade refrigeration systems. We have previously used R-22 as the high stage refrigerant. In Europe R-22 is no longer acceptable in new equipment. By switching to NU-22, an accepted HFC alternative, we can stay with a single refrigerant for all areas of the world. We have found we can maintain our capillary sizes, greatly simplifying the changeover process. This also allows NU-22 to be used as a drop-in replacement in field
